Motive Power

What are we doing?
United States. The railroad’s locomotive roster includes the last six engines built for the EBT by Baldwin Locomotive Works from 1911 through 1920. These locomotives (No. 12 – 18) were used heavily during the railroad’s common-carrier era. Four of the six ran heavily during the tourist era from 1960 – 2011. As a result, they all require heavy repair and restoration to return to service. In addition to the fleet of steam engines, the EBT has serval one-of-a-kind gas motorcars built by the railroad’s own shops. For example, the M-1 is a gasoline-electric self-propelled motorcar constructed in 1926. It was a cost-effective solution to running passenger and mail service obligations without the expense of steam engines. The M-1 still exists today and is the last of its kind anywhere in the world still in operation.

Restoring A Legacy
In 2023, steam returned to the East Broad Top for the first time since 2011 as Locomotive No. 16 moved under its own power for the first time in 67 years. Our mission is to eventually see all six return to life as resources and labor allow. Locomotive No. 15 has been chosen as the next candidate for restoration, likely followed by No. 14.
