Frequently Asked Question

Everything you need to know about the East Broad Top Foundation, its history, and how you can make a difference.

How old is the East Broad Top Railroad and why is it historically significant?

The East Broad Top Railroad, founded in 1873 in Rockhill, Pennsylvania, is one of the oldest and best-preserved narrow gauge railroads in the country. It is also a National Historic Landmark, which is rare for a working railroad. Originally, it carried coal and timber from central Pennsylvania and played a key role in the area’s industrial growth. When the railroad stopped commercial operations in 1956, much of it remained untouched, including its original locomotives, cars, buildings, and tracks. Today, visiting the East Broad Top lets you step back into the railroad era of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
